English in Mind – Resources for teaching English to teenagers and adults

Do you want to teach English to adult beginners?  Where do you begin?  Do you start with vocabulary?  Do you begin with phonetics? You could waste a lot of time teaching if, at the end of the term, the student can only recite a few words and can not speak a full sentence.

If you can teach English to teenagers, you can teach anyone.  Teenagers can be willing students one day, and disobedient, unmotivated, and unwilling the next day.  Some teenagers and adult learners of English have not coped well in their younger years, both at school and home.
English in Mind Starter Students
English in Mind – Starter series provides a learning pathway that will expedite the learning process, teaching vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation reading, phonetics, writing, and speaking.  The English in Mind series is suitable for teenage and adult learners who have either not reached a level of competency at school or who are learning English as a second language.

Written for teenagers, English in Mind creates an inspiring learning experience for secondary students. The English in mind series has a choice of imaginative topics, texts, and exercises matched to students’ interests, ages, and abilities. The series has a strong focus on grammar and vocabulary and offers flexibility and support in the form of photocopiable activities and tests in the Teacher’s Resource Pack, ‘EiMTV’ DVDs, Workbook CD-ROMs, and the free worksheets, quizzes, wordlists and resources on the website. Each level of the course provides 80-90 hours of work with the possibility of extension. The Starter level is for complete beginners, and Level 1 is for elementary students and contains a 16-page starter section to revise essential language. Levels 2 to 5 take students from pre-intermediate to advanced level.

  1. I was just having a conversation with a new acquaintance today about his daughter’s struggle continuing their English education when their family relocated to Italy for a few years. He cited pronunciation as one of the most difficult aspects because his daughters knew how Mom and Dad pronounced certain words at home (Dad, at the least, being a Native English speaker). But sometimes their teachers would insist on pronunciations that his daughters would deem “incorrect.” This series seems like a great place for any non-English speaker to get started learning the language. Do you know if Cambridge produces these series’ for other languages too?

  2. Hello, I found your page on the English in Mind Starter Series books and I was hoping to ask you a question about it. See, I never took  English in college as I got an Associates Degree in art from well an art school haha. Now, I’m looking into taking an online English college course from EDx or Coursera and I’m wondering if the English in Mind Starter Series would be a good way to review high school English class and relearn anything I have forgotten? I want to be well prepared for the online college class because I am going to pay for the Certificate of Completion which they offer. Thanks again and let me know!
